In three-spined sticklebacks, males (left; red on abdomen) guard nests containing eggs.

Sometimes females (right) cooperate by forming "marauding" groups to overpower males, attacking their nests and eating the eggs within them.

Benefits of such raids include

• • nutritional value of the eggs eaten

• • a single female may mate with the male

• • eliminating potential competitors for their own offspring
